As the official, exclusive photography Licensee of the 35th America's Cup looking to secure unique images to best document Bermuda's version of the historic event, to LookBermuda photographer and filmmaker Jean-Pierre Rouja it was clear that the event would already be well documented by local and international media from traditional vantage points. Coupled with the fact that drones were banned during the events and the only helicopters were focused on low altitude TV filming it left only one option from which to shoot alternate, unique angles: a small Cessna, restricted to flying above 1500 ft.
The following images were produced from this platform during the 2015 and 2017 events flying between 1500 and 4000 ft with the goal of showcasing Bermuda, the perfect venue for the America's Cup from this rarely seen perspective, ultimately being the only images documenting the event from the air. Many of the aerial-panoramas that follow are of several hundred megapixels allowing for ultra high resolution printing and large mural type installations.
All images are, and shall continue to be available as non-branded Fine Art aluminum prints, with free delivery to most destinations worldwide and with some images available as larger 6 to 8 ft museum grade acrylic, unique corporate gifts and custom murals up to 25ft wide.
Through to the end of 2017 (the program has now ended), selections of the resulting imagery were available as official AC branded fine art photography under LookBermuda's license with the America's Cup Event Authority. *Photos with an AC logo will link directly to our online shopping cart (where they are now available without the logo), or please visit www.LookBermuda.com/shop for the standard options. These closeups were captured of OTUSA and ETNZ dueling in the finals. Photographing the foiling AC 50's with a handheld telephoto out of the window of a moving plane at 1500+ ft above the course was not optimal, nor our focus during this shoot, especially as helicopters flying under 500ft were much better postioned to obtain these types of action shots, however we did like the way the boats tracks often look like calligraphy as they duel with each other.
Lionheart clinched the first ever America's Cup J Class Regatta from a record J Class fleet racing in Murray's Anchorage off of St Georges.
J-P Rouja: "The race course was unfortunately set near the approach path to the Airport and accordingly the airspace became even further restricted with each approaching commercial flight causing us to miss some of the action, nonetheless some of these images are my favorites from the whole event. Seeing the J's in the context of Bermuda is incredible and we hope to see them back on a regular basis."
The combination of J Class and other Super Yachts competing off of the East End of the island was stunning, with once again Lionheart winning the Regatta.
J Class demonstration race on The America's Cup course. This was a handheld tele-pano from base of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse (as the Cessna was already booked for that time slot). This image and many of the other panoramas can be printed 15+ ft wide.
These images shot on June 25th the last Sunday of the finals, showcase the largest spectator fleet of the whole event.
There were over 2000 registered spectator vessels including 460 visiting boats and 80 Super Yachts, well exceeding the 2015 World Series spectator fleet.
The aerial panoramas are several hundred megapixels and can be printed at very large scale to the point where many will be able to identify their own boats. LookBermuda is in discussions to install these in high traffic locations around the island and locations such as AC Sponsor's boardrooms.
The course was situated on the Great Sound, rated as one of the most perfect sailing venues in the world, including the purpose built America's Cup Event Village built on on Cross-Island, 9 acres of recently reclaimed land in the historic Royal Navy Dockyard, in Somerset, Bermuda.
We have literally thousands of images shot during the events including gigapixel panoramas suitable for printing up to 10ft x 40ft. Should you be interested in murals or art of a specific date and location that features your team, boat or yacht, please contact us: orders@lookbermuda.com
