Chief Terrestrial Conservation Officer Jeremy Maderios conducts health checks of chicks on Nonsuch Island in Bermuda.
These are Endemic Bermuda Petrel or "Cahow" chicks, the second rarest seabirds on the planet.
They only nest on Nonsuch Island and the surrounding rocks where they were discovered in the 1950's after being thought extinct for 300+ years, making them a "Lazarus" Species.
In the 2016 nesting season when these photos were taken, just under 50 chicks successfully fledged out to sea contributing to a total of just over 300 birds in the total global population.
The award winning CahowCam has live-streamed from one of their underground nesting chambers for the past 4 years. After partnering with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for the 2017 season, 8.5 million minutes of video were viewed by scientists, students and followers around the world.
